WHAT IS LIFE LIKE FOR OTHER KIDS AND WHAT CAN I DO?

Meet MIMI!

Mimi is an 9-year-old Burmese girl.  Her parents were forced to flee their home in Myanmar (Burma) because they were heavily persecuted for beliefs. Do you know where Burma is?

Accused of taking part in a protest, Mimi’s dad was thrown in prison. When he was released, Mimi’s family decided that they could not stay in Burma any longer.  The family later fled to Malaysia where they took refuge in a camp. Find Malaysia on the map!

From Malaysia, Mimi’s family moved to Atlanta, Georgia in the USA in June 2007. That sure is a lot of moving, isn’t it?

Bright and full of fun, Mimi is adapting well to her new life in America – and she’s helping her parents make the difficult transition, too. The Clarkston community near Atlanta where Mimi lives has the biggest concentration of refugees in the United States. Mimi’s apartment complex is home to refugees from around the world. Her best friend is a little girl from Cuba.

Mimi – who has an older brother and baby sister – is a 2nd grader at the local elementary school, where she quickly learned English. She’s teaching her mom and dad English words and translating for them when necessary.

Every week, Mimi looks forward to Sunday. On Sundays, she goes to church with her family and worships Jesus.
